APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ - A Revolutionary Breakthrough for Reading Disorders and Dyslexic Readers: Preparing Special Needs Learners for CCSS Success

Pleased to be a part of such a timely and most significant forum for exploration and exchange...

I have read hundreds of posts in response to the newly adopted, "Core Standards." There is significant concern. A position must be established that assures our children's progress and well being. Most certainly 'standards' have inherent value, but are NOT to be instituted at the demise of a child's mental, physical and spiritual well being. Having worked in private practice with hundreds of learners, I have come to appreciate and value diversity, imaginative thinking, creativity, and learning styles that do not respond well to being 'boxed in.' The APOGEE Paradigm™ grew out of the call to give homage to the distant light ever present.

There is absolutely NO Stopping Me... I will present what being an educator, since 1960, has brought to bear... CHILDREN FIRST... Beyond a test score is the treasure of each child's BEING!! No curriculum, no "Core Standard" hold to value, if at 'core' they are not supportively responsive to each child's needs, learning style, intelligence, creativity and imagination... CHILDREN are not robots to be programmed... but BEINGS to be honored!!! Rose Marie Raccioppi

(*key, basic, fundamental, principal, primary, main, chief, crucial, vital, essential; informal: number-one.)

First there be creation's divinity... conception... be there sound... the mother's heartbeat, inner vibrations transmitted, inner flows to nourish and bring life into development... delivery... and the first cry... breath filling the lungs... life its own force...  the feeling...the movement... the reaching... the seeing... the echoing... the following... the Being... the Doing... the Having... the learning child as reception and response... this the hologram... this the BEING known to  Self and others... A propensity, a preference for exploration and discovery and so learning takes hold.

Reading, as observation, as connection, is a natural process. A child 'reads' the mother's expressions,  'reads' its space and surroundings, feels the effect of what it experiences, what the effect is of what was 'read.'  Impressions upon all sensibilities create  'a reading.' It is understanding that there are particular leanings toward one's approach to learning that we have come to identify as 'learning style.'  And so we have conceptual frameworks that have put forth 'multiple intelligences' and 'learning style paradigms.' Multiplicity, diversity, selectivity, applies to each individual, as too, it applies to groups of individuals.

The effects from 'failed purpose' have called for educators to look deeply into teaching methodology, special need, learning style, readiness, skill sets, multiple intelligences, motivation, and most significantly relevance. Students that have made and continue to make their way to APOGEE Learning Enhancement Training Systems™ have had 'failed purpose.'  Reading below 'grade level' brings callers to APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ .  This is a system based on the developmental processes of observation, exploration, discovery, integration and application. Appreciating that the child is a natural builder and sound creator, before it is a sculptor or an artist, the primary 'doing' in creating the form that matches the sound is first to build it. And so delight is built into... From twigs from trees, I learn my A B Cs.

As I read each aspect of reading, as presented in the proposed 'Common Core', I thought, I take little exception to the delineated goals for reading competence. The 'goals' however,  most certainly call for relevant activities and practices. Reading is a dynamic process and is not to be relegated exclusively to workbook exercises or test taking skills that tap into a limited range of propensities. Reading is the observation of form and corresponding sound for each letter, reading is the configuration of sound into symbolic form, reading is understanding the particular symbolism of grouped letters as they come to have 'meaning' in the context of our direct experience. The student is CORE not the curriculum... and as such must be understood, appreciated and supported, not only as a particular grade member, but as an individual with diversity of experience and need. The goals of a curriculum must be highly respectful of relevance,  purpose and the needs of the populace, individually and collectively,  it aims to teach. Creativity, identification, expression in the arts, and integration are CORE to the reading experience.

APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ has facilitated the development of reading mastery across all curriculum areas for scores and scores of students for over thirty years. Its time has come to be known for the documented success it brings.

Improved Reading Performance with APOGEE Somatic Phonics™

“To learn to read is to light a fire;
every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”
Victor Hugo ~ French Romantic Poet, Novelist and Dramatist, 1802-1885.

"...to read is to experience each letter
as a symbolic configuration of sounding form..."
Rose Marie Raccioppi

Is your child struggling with dyslexia? Is he or she a misunderstood learner? APOGEE Learning Enhancement Training Systems™ is the answer. APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ is an integrated system developed for the dyslexic student to assure reading success. Twenty-eight years of documented success define the APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ Program. Reading with APOGEE Somatic Phonics™ becomes easier, word knowledge becomes more developed, and comprehension, spelling and writing improve. With a new and masterful command of reading, interest in other subject areas expand, focus is improved and grades soar to new heights.

APOGEE Learning™ takes a holistic approach to serving all learners at all ages and in all grades, including the special needs of those with learning disabilities. All programs are developed and administered by Rose Marie Raccioppi, a state-certified, honored, awarded and highly acclaimed educator, within a warm and nurturing environment. Each one-on-one session is personalized and available in all subjects.

With APOGEE Somatic Phonics™, specific letter sounding practices are initiated allowing one to confidently learn the distinction among letter sounds and letter names. Seeing, hearing, touching and perceiving define the scope of reading and the reading process. Observation itself is reading. Once the sound association is clear, the visual symbol is introduced via a three-dimensional object. Once that step is mastered, a two-dimensional representation is introduced. It is a truly integrated multi-sensory experience.

Each letter read and sounded is evaluated via APOGEE Cognitive Kinesiology™, a process that allows the student to understand the integrative action of the mind-body energy system. This process is utilized to determine if the letter brings about a stress response. If a stress response is found, a series of activities are initiated to address the specific finding. Once the stress response is abated, which is the result of the newly introduced experience of rebuilding the structure of the physical letter, one proceeds to view the printed word with renewed energy and focus. It is well known that people avoid that which is painful or stressful. By eliminating the stress associated with reading, the process then becomes an exploratory and pleasurable experience. Improved reading performance is a guaranteed outcome.

Rose Marie Raccioppi, MS FABI is state-certified in regular and special education, supervision and administration. With advanced studies in psychology, education, cognition, stress management and holistic health, Raccioppi's program is comprehensive. In addition to her academic excellence, she is an exhibiting artist, published poet and the Poet Laureate of Orangetown, New York.
