Responsive to the Different Learner...

Appreciating and being appropriately responsive to a learner's interest, creativity, learning style, specific needs, define the attributes of an effective teacher. Differences and diversity are inherent in the human condition. Validation and support are essential to the growing and developing child and the different learner through the life span. Being the difference, making the difference... www.2learnnow.com

Could it very well BE? ... young souls not willing...

Could it BE that the very young souls who have been deemed as having ADD and ADHD are souls simply not willing to be victims of false truths? Are these young souls refusing to give attention to what they know, in their own special way, is not TRUTH? I have been an educator for several decades. The children I teach are my master teachers. They have chosen not to wear masks of deception. They have chosen to resist confining regimentation. They yet hold sacred the TRUTH that is true for them.

There appears to be an existing confusion between 'differences' and 'dysfunction.' When 'differences' are not seen for their specific expression, their particular need, their particular orientation, and judged, punished, demeaned... 'dysfunction' on a myriad of levels is expressed physically, emotionally and spiritually . No child is born with a gun, a knife, a bomb in hand. Somewhere along the way the innocence and quest to reach, to be known, to live care and support, are lost by those who then destroy, kill and take their own lives. CAUSE and EFFECT must be more fully examined and more deeply understood.

Living by, "The Four Agreements," put forth by Don Miguel Ruiz, has brought my truth to be known by the SELF that becomes aware of its SELF. I have come presently to live, "The Fifth Agreement." It provides the teachings that hold to the Celebration of our TRUTH. Within these works lies the path of THE WAY. Yes, the Counsel of SPIRIT prevails.

"Bright Not Broken"

http://www.brightnotbroken.com/

About the book

Bright Not Broken sheds new light on this vibrant population by identifying who twice exceptional children are and taking an unflinching look at why they’re stuck.

The first work to boldly examine the widespread misdiagnosis and controversies that arise from our current diagnostic system, it serves as a call to action call for parents and professionals to question why our mental health and education systems continue to fail some of our brightest children.

Too often, these kids are caught in an endless cycle of chasing diagnostic labels, being prescribed dangerous medications, and are never given the tools to fully develop their gifts and talents.

An added word...

Yesterday, I attended a presentation by the authors and most certainly identify with the expressed perspectives. APOGEE Learning - http://www.apogeelearning.com/ - indeed shares in this mission of advocacy on behalf of our special children. Since 1983, APOGEE Learning has served the needs of 'Twice-Exceptional Children.' Self awareness, self knowledge, self mastery, along with appropriate supports for both the academics and the arts, have brought ongoing documented success to 'Twice-Exceptional Children.'

Post Script to: "Get to Know" ADD & ADHD

Food additives linked to ADHD
By Rachel : Healthy Living eTips

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently surveyed 73,000 children and found one in 10 has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is a 22% increase since 2003. Research has shown that toxic and deficient lifestyle patterns are the chief contributing factor for this disorder. Natural lifestyle solutions can prevent and reverse ADHD.

Many researchers consider chronic ADHD symptoms a sign of mild-moderate brain damage. When regions of the brain are chronically inflamed it signals the primitive regions of the brain to be on overdrive. This inhibits frontal lobe function which is the region responsible for concentration and emotional stability. The primitive regions on overdrive include the reticular activating system and limbic system. When this primitive brain is imbalanced it leads to poor concentration and emotional outbursts.

ADHD is commonly caused by an inflammatory based diet and toxic food additives. These food additive chemicals are mild-moderately neurotoxic. They also have a strong synergistic effect when combined with sugars such as fructose. A recent Lancet study concluded that food dyes along with the preservative sodium benzoate (found in many soft drinks, fruit juices, & salad dressings) cause many children to become significantly more hyperactive and distractible. This study also found that food additives and dyes can do as much damage to children's brains as lead in gasoline.

Digestive problems can also dramatically affect brain function and development. A common factor with ADHD is a weak intestinal system and food allergies. Often times a Candida infection is present and producing brain damaging toxic metabolites. It is wise to address the gut and allow it to heal by avoiding allergens and supplementing with high quality Probiotics.

The most common food allergens to avoid include all pasteurized dairy products and gluten containing grains such as wheat, barley, rye, oats, kamut, & spelt. Soy products, some nuts, eggs, and heavy proteins are often not tolerated well. Other allergens include those of the nightshade family such as eggplant, tomatoes, & potatoes.

An anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle are critical for full recovery from this condition. Anti-inflammatory foods help to modulate the immune system and give it a more accurate pair of eyes so as to not over-inflame when stimulated. To effectively de-inflame it is key to completely avoid man-made foods, sugars, and food allergens as listed above. The long chain omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are critical for brain function.

Healthy movement patterns produce proprioception (movement information) which is a critical essential for healthy brain enhancing and neurodevelopmental patterns. Boosting proprioceptive input through good posture and spinal function is critical for healthy brain development. Regular chiropractic care along with spinal hygiene exercises are essential lifestyle factors for healthy neurological function.

Children, teenagers, & adults with ADHD symptoms do very well with a regular exercise program that incorporates core stability and functional balance training. Many hyperactive kids are naturally drawn to activities such as rebounding and jumping on a trampoline as well as balance sports such as skating, surfing and snowboarding. All of these dynamic balance based activities powerfully enhance proprioceptive input into the brain.

Other critical nutrients that are key for brain function include Vitamin D, Folic acid, Pyridoxine (B6), Vitamin B12, Zinc, CoQ10, and trace minerals. Vitamin D levels should be between 60-100 ng/ml. Boost Vitamin D naturally with 20-60 minutes of healthy sunlight every day or 5,000-50,000 IU of emulsified vitamin D3 daily to get the levels where they should be. A raw, whole-food multi-vitamin that supplies ample amounts of folic acid (400 mcg), B6 (4mg), B12(100 mcg), Zinc (15 mg), trace minerals, & CoQ10 (500 mcg) should be consumed daily.

Keeping Natural Natural - Our Children Deserve No Less

Study: ADHD linked to pesticide exposure. This is why food/nutritional guidance, chemical/pesticide exposure, need be part of understanding behavior and development of children across the age span. Before "medicating" a child for attention, learning and behavior problems, become aware of contributing factors. Our children deserve no less.

APOGEE Learning™ has long recognized the need and significance of assessing a child's exposure to toxins, allergens, pesticides, that may be present in a home, a playground, a school, a park, a community. We cannot continue to compromise the health, well being, and learning potential of our children. Let us couple awareness with action for protection.

Study: ADHD linked to pesticide exposure

By Sarah Klein, Health.com

Is enough being done to protect us from chemicals that could harm us? Watch "Toxic America," a special two-night investigative report with Sanjay Gupta M.D., June 2 & 3 at 8 p.m. ET on CNN.

(Health.com) -- Children exposed to higher levels of a type of pesticide found in trace amounts on commercially grown fruit and vegetables are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than children with less exposure, a nationwide study suggests.

Researchers measured the levels of pesticide byproducts in the urine of 1,139 children from across the United States. Children with above-average levels of one common byproduct had roughly twice the odds of getting a diagnosis of ADHD, according to the study, which appears in the journal Pediatrics.

Exposure to the pesticides, known as organophosphates, has been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems in children in the past, but previous studies have focused on communities of farm workers and other high-risk populations. This study is the first to examine the effects of exposure in the population at large.

Organophosphates are "designed" to have toxic effects on the nervous system, says the lead author of the study, Maryse Bouchard, Ph.D., a researcher in the department of environmental and occupational health at the University of Montreal. "That's how they kill pests."

The pesticides act on a set of brain chemicals closely related to those involved in ADHD, Bouchard explains, "so it seems plausible that exposure to organophosphates could be associated with ADHD-like symptoms."

Environmental Protection Agency regulations have eliminated most residential uses for the pesticides (including lawn care and termite extermination), so the largest source of exposure for children is believed to be food, especially commercially grown produce. Adults are exposed to the pesticides as well, but young children appear to be especially sensitive to them, the researchers say.

Detectable levels of pesticides are present in a large number of fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S., according to a 2008 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited in the study. In a representative sample of produce tested by the agency, 28 percent of frozen blueberries, 20 percent of celery, and 25 percent of strawberries contained traces of one type of organophosphate. Other types of organophosphates were found in 27 percent of green beans, 17 percent of peaches, and 8 percent of broccoli.

Although kids should not stop eating fruits and vegetables, buying organic or local produce whenever possible is a good idea, says Bouchard.

"Organic fruits and vegetables contain much less pesticides, so I would certainly advise getting those for children," she says. "National surveys have also shown that fruits and vegetables from farmers' markets contain less pesticides even if they're not organic. If you can buy local and from farmers' markets, that's a good way to go."

A direct cause-and-effect link between pesticides and ADHD "is really hard to establish," says Dana Boyd Barr, Ph.D., a professor of environmental and occupational health at Emory University. However, she says, "There appears to be some relation between organophosphate pesticide exposure and the development of ADHD."

This is the largest study of its kind to date, according to Barr, who researched pesticides for more than 20 years in her previous job with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention but was not involved in the study.

Bouchard and her colleagues analyzed urine samples from children ages 8 to 15. The samples were collected during an annual, nationwide survey conducted by the CDC, known as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The researchers tested the samples for six chemical byproducts (known as metabolites) that result when the body breaks down more than 28 different pesticides. Nearly 95 percent of the children had at least one byproduct detected in their urine.

Just over 10 percent of the children in the study were diagnosed with ADHD. The kids were judged to have ADHD if their symptoms (as reported by parents) met established criteria for the disorder, or if they had taken ADHD medication regularly in the previous year.

One group of pesticide byproducts was associated with a substantially increased risk of ADHD. Compared with kids who had the lowest levels, the kids whose levels were 10 times higher were 55 percent more likely to have ADHD. (Another group of byproducts did not appear to be linked to the disorder.)

In addition, children with higher-than-average levels of the most commonly detected byproduct -- found in roughly 6 in 10 kids -- were nearly twice as likely to have ADHD.

"It's not a small effect," says Bouchard. "This is 100 percent more risk."

To isolate the effect of the pesticide exposure on ADHD symptoms, the researchers controlled for a variety of health and demographic factors that could have skewed the results.

Still, the study had some limitations and is not definitive, Bouchard says. Most notably, she and her colleagues measured only one urine sample for each child, and therefore weren't able to track whether the levels of pesticide byproducts were constant, or whether the association between exposure and ADHD changed over time.

Long-term studies including multiple urine samples from the same children are needed, Bouchard says. She suspects such studies would show an even stronger link between pesticide byproducts and ADHD.

EPA spokesman Dale Kemery said in a statement that the agency routinely reviews the safety of all pesticides, including organophosphates. "We are currently developing a framework to incorporate data from studies similar to this one into our risk assessment," Kemery said. "We will look at this study and use the framework to decide how it fits into our overall risk assessment."

Kemery recommended that parents try other pest-control tactics before resorting to pesticide use in the home or garden. Washing and peeling fruits and vegetables and eating "a varied diet" will also help reduce potential exposure to pesticides, he said.

"I would hope that this study raises awareness as to the risk associated with pesticide exposure," Bouchard says. "There's really only a handful of studies on this subject out there, so there's room for more awareness."

APOGEE Learning Enhancement Training Systems™

Learn the Most Successful Study
and
Subject Mastery Strategies

Mastery of any subject calls for the the 3 Cs: (1) Commitment (2) Courage (3)
Competence. An achiever, a student warrior learns that any barrier to study, to mastery, can be overcome. The achiever asks: How is what I am expected to learn relevant? What is its importance? What is to be done? How am I to start? What steps do I need to take? How is my success measured? What tools are there to help me? What benefit will I derive? Having answers to these questions provide meaningful motivation, assuring a Commitment, a willingness to invest time and effort.

Understanding of one's needs, of one's learning style, of one's interest, of one's talents, of one's strong points, confronting one's fears, doubts, concerns, brings one to a state of Courage, to a state of self awareness, to an opportunity to be proactive, to meet the challenge of learning and mastery.

Commitment and Courage provide the impetus for learning and mastery. Learning, to be effective and life long, must be cultivated from personal need and motivation. Competence is developed, is experienced when one sees the effectiveness of one's approach, effort and devoted time. The benefits of Commitment, Courage and Competence are cyclic, the process is cyclic, each opens the door to the other.

The achiever learns that (1) one is to know the meaning and the particular context of each word in an assignment, in an instruction, in what is read, heard or demonstrated. No word that is not fully understood is to be glossed over. Every word is to be 'cleared' for understanding, application and relevance. The achiever learns that (2) there is to be 'mass' to what is learned, how does this idea, concept, object, function, in the world of action, interaction, purpose? The achiever learns that (3) there is a 'gradient' to all learning. One needs to identify what the prerequisite skills are for each step, each requirement, each expectation.

These principles of mastery apply to all stages of learning, to the first grader, as well as to the upper grade student, and to the adult learner. One begins with the end in mind, in focus, in perspective. One learns to think, "Win/Win." Overcoming barriers to learning, is a game plan of (1) Self-awareness, (2) Intention, (3) Strategy, (4) Confidence, (5) Understanding, (6) Integration, (7) Personal renewal - all marked for winning scores.

Let us begin a dialogue that benefits our children
and their learning potential.
